THE AREA -> CHRYSSOMILIA
(APANO PERLIANGO)
On the northern slores of Neraida peak, at an altitude of 900 m, opposite Koziakas mountain, 25 km from Kalambaka, lies the village of Chryssomilia. The locals are mostly stock-farmers and seasonal workers and loggers. In the winter 150-170 families live in the village, while in the summer the population rises to 2,000 people.
500m above the village there is a beautiful forest of fir, chestnut and cedar trees. The site Gadelos, 3 km further, is ideal for camping among fir-trees, with a spring nearby and a view of the whole area.
Although Chryssomilia was burned by the Germans in 1943, many of the old stone houses and churches (Ai-Lias, Panaghia, Aghios Konstantinos, Aghia Triada, Aghion Apostolon, Aghios Sotiras, Aghia Paraskevi) were preserved, as well as the monastery of Taxiarches and the bridges of Koukourava and Rountzi. Katerina, Stratiki and Platanos are springs with crystal waters in the village.
Chryssomilia celebrates Christmas and Easter in the traditional way. There is a feast on August 15th, with the whole village eating together in the village square. The chapel of Panagia celebrates on August 23rd.
You should taste the homemade wild-vegetable pie, stifado (onion stew), roast lamb and goat in the
taverns and buy walnuts, apples, cheese and butter from the farmers.
