THE AREA -> PALAIOCHORI
Palaiochori is located 47Km southwest from Kalambaka and 7Km away from Aidona, at 1,050m above the sea level. It is surrounded by the following tops of Pindos: Kokkinovrysi (1,700m), Gionali (1,700m), Goura (1,900m), Soufli (2,010m), Triggia (2,204m) and 6,000 square meters of fir-tree forest along Pliatsikas, Vlacha, Katonistha and Kogia rivers.

The springs Anavra (at the south side of the village, on the left hand of the main way), Vlacha (on the west among the fir-trees) and Kalogeros (2Km south) integrate with the beauty of the landscape. A cave of 40m in depth and a surface of 60 square meters, where ice was stored in the past, is located at Soufli place, 50m below the homonymous top. The hill Goulemi offers an endless view to 300 square meters of plains and to Meteora rocks, but only when the weather is favourable.

The flora and fauna in the area is rich and there is also a range of game. Foreign scientists have studied the rocks in the area numerous times. At Lampousia place there is an old, stone-built fountain. The exact date the village was built is not known but it’s a fact that it is very old.

It seems that the residents of Palaiogortsia (the ancient name) who abandoned the village due to some illness came back and gave the village its new name.

During the 14-16th of September each year the village celebrates the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Saint Vessarionas, the patron saint of the village, in the homonymous church. On the 6th of August (Transfiguration) the annual dance takes place in the central square with traditionally dressed dancing groups performing.

A mill that belongs to the church has been in use since 1904 and the people of Palaiochori still use it for their needs.

Visitors should taste bean-shoup, tripe, splenantero and kokoretsi. Don’t forget to buy mountain-tea, vegetables and honey from the local producers.
