THE AREA -> KALOGRIANI
It is a mountainous village of Pindos (840m), 42km south-west of Kalambaka (the final 2Km is dirt road). The 250 inhabitants’ major occupation is cattle-breeding.
The name Kalogriani is often met in Meteora manuscripts.
The population, during summer months, rises up to 700 people.
The tops Rousida (1,490m) and Mademi (1,492m) surround the village. Kalogriani gets drinkable water from Goura, Nerla, Logtsa and Zacharakaina springs. From Goura, Meteora Rocks can be seen clearly. The forest of Kalogriani a common property of the monastery of Stagiades and the Community.
Ruins of the Monastery of Saint Ioannis are preserved till nowadays. At the Mantania settlement, a water-scrubber (“dristella”) is still in use.
The most important festivals for the villagers are the one of Saint Nikolaos, in the homonymous country church, which is only 3Km away from the village’s square, and another on August 15th which lasts for three days.
The carnival is celebrated with special events-happenings and in Christmas the custom of “Gournochara” (the slaughtering of the pig with songs) takes place.
You should taste roast lamb, buy meat and vegetables. Do not miss the chance to visit Mandemi and walk all the way up to Rousida.
