SIGHTSEEINGS -> Route No.3
Katafyto (Kottori)
A few km NW of Tria Potamia lies the village of Katafyto, lost in the green-clad slopes of Kedros at an altitude of 1000 m. The stream of Pottokos, on its way to join Acheloos, flows through the village and there are several springs and fountains in the area (Tsokna, Xynori, Bouta). This probably justifies the fact that the emblem of the former municipality of Lakmon, to which Katafyto once belonged, depicted an old man holding an urn with water flowing from its mouth.
The village of Milia belongs to the same village council. Katafyto has 450 inhabitants in the summer (11 in the winter) and Milia 150 and 4 respectively.
A typical village of nomadic stock-breeders it relies financially also on logging and bee-keeping, during the summer.
Although modernisation has changed much in village life, the watermill wheel still keeps on turning, at least once a year, grinding memories rather than grain.
Trekking to the peaks of Xerovouni, Skliva and Kedros is worth a try, as one can enjoy the wild beauty of Pindos. From Xerovouni one has a view of Chaliki, while the locals say that from Kalouta even the lake of loannina can sometimes be seen.
A notable monument of 1763, the three-winged basilica of Aghios Nikolaos is a typical sample of local architecture. Equally interesting, in this aspect, are the stone-built houses of the village, the mansion of Petsopouli built in early 19th c. being the most characteristic.
At the two village feasts the visitor can be acquainted with local folk music and taste lamb on the spit, kebab and kokoretsi : on June 20-21st in Milia, and on August 14-16th at the three-day feast of Panaghia in the village square.
VISIT The church of Aghios Nikolaos, the spring of Analata and the old watermill. ENJOY Mountain climbing.
