Stefani (Skliniasa)

The highest village of Trikala, at an altitude of 1480 m, 75 km from Trikala, it is deserted in the winter. The 300 inhabitants, mostly stock-farmers, move to the town of Farsala together with the village council.

The climate here is dry. Characteristic are the several stone fountains: Kiatra, Nestora, Coucoufli e.t.c. Dense beech and fir-tree forests surround the village dominated by the towering peaks of Tre Gagots (1900m), Bourli (1950m), Stiarpa (1700m, here grows the plant from the roots of which the traditional beverage «Salepi» is prepared), Cheli (1900m), Pailtanos (2150m) and Triena (1800m). From Cheli one can see Metsovo and Ioannina. Stiarpa is a wild animal refuge.

Notable is the church of Aghia Paraskevi (1770), with a carved wood icon screen and remarkable murals. It celebrates on July 26th, with a feast in the village square accompanied by a traditional folk music band.

The main event in the village is the feast of August 15th, organised by the local cultural society, with theatrical performances, traditional sports events and other festivities.

In July and August, the locals organise trekking excursions on mountain paths, in groups of 40-50 people, especially during the full moon of August.
